THOUSANDS of people lined the streets of Caldicot yesterday as carnival fun came to Gwent.

The sun peeped through the clouds as youngsters and adults alike enjoyed the carnival and funfair.

The pubs in the Monmouthshire town were also full to bursting as revellers sank drinks in the Bank Holiday sunshine.

Three floats and the parade were led through Caldicot by 12-year-old Carnival Queen Lucie Veale and finished in the grounds of the 14th century castle - where all the fun was happening.

The judging panel - led by new town mayor David Evans - believed the Bob the Builder float, prepared by staff and regulars at Caldicot's Galleon pub, won best float. And they voted that the 'Old Lady who live in a Show' float prepared by the Kids In Safe Schools group won best children's float.

In the Castle grounds there were many stalls to visit. There were also displays from members of Caldicot's gymnastics and mini-rugby clubs and young soccer players who play for Sudbrook Cricket Club's side.

There were also many funfair rides, including the popular dodgems and waltzers, for everyone to enjoy.

Caldicot mayor Mr Evans said: "I am very impressed by the amount of people who have turned out for this carnival.

"Thankfully the weather has been kind to us as have the people of Caldicot. This year there was a high standard of float entries and it was hard to pick winners.

"It has been a great day and everyone seems to have had a good time." Other Gwent carnivals this year include Chepstow on June 30, Abergavenny and Pontypool on July 14 and Monmouth on August 12.
