RESIDENTS on a Newport estate are saying "good riddance" to two notorious blocks of flats being demolished this week.

The 'Star' block of flats in Alway have long been associated with anti-social behaviour, including drug taking and alcohol abuse.

The flats are now being knocked down following consultation with residents during last year's Alway Feasibility Study.

One of the suggestions made by Alway residents in the study was for the two star-shaped blocks of flats, first let in July 1964, to be demolished.

Newport council let a contract for the demolition to Cuddy Demolition and Dismantling Limited who started work in April.

At the end of the contract period the site will be completely clear and will be grassed over.

Eight houses on the estate which have been empty for a lengthy period will also be demolished. The unpopular Star blocks have long been a focal point for many residents grievances over anti-social behaviour on the Alway estate.

Of the 48 bedsit flats on the two buildings, only two were occupied in October last year, when the feasibility study, commissioned by Gwent and Glamorgan Housing Association, was made public.

Alway councillor Ray Truman said: "There will be a lot of people on the Alway estate clapping their hands today to see the back of the flats."
