FIVE-times Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave will be organising a marathon round of golf tournaments for charity in Gwent.

The oarsman's celebrity/amateur tour begins at the Celtic Manor Resort next Tuesday and takes in four other prime courses, the final one at the La Manga Club in Spain.

The aim is to raise over £5 million for children's charities. Labelled 'Sir Steve Redgrave's Golden Five', the tourneys will attract 40 amateurs and the same number of celebrity golfers, including many TV personalities, British Lions and other sports stars.

The whole day at Newport, which will end with a champagne reception and gala dinner, is geared towards the £5 million target.

The schedule begins in the morning with a nine-hole Texas Scramble for amateurs, guests and a celebrity in each team. After lunch there will be a shotgun start at 1pm for the 18-hole main event.

Competitors will play in groups of four consisting of two pairs: one celebrity and one 'am' player in each.

In addition to a pairs title, players will compete for three individual Order of Merit competitions.

Winners will proceed to the 36-hole Golden Five Masters championship at La Manga. The BBC will be televising the Celtic Resort opener for its Grandstand programme on June 2.
