"NO complaints' - was Christian Malcolm's verdict on his opening race of the outdoors athletics season as he destroyed the field to win both the 100m and 200m titles at the Aqua-Pura International.

Having returned from warm-weather training a week ago, Malcolm shook off the cobwebs to win the 200m in 20.63 against some impressive opposition after earlier winning the 100m race.

Lining up against him were Scotland's Doug Walker (European Champion), Julian Golding, as well as training partner, not to mention World Youth Champion Tim Benjamin, but Malcolm cruised home after accelerating off the bend - to break a seventeen year old record.

His winning time eclipsed Todd Bennett's 1984 record of 20.73 secs and signals the beginning of his quest to add another medal to the silver he won at the World Indoor Championships last February in Lisbon.

Malcolm said: "I can't argue with that, I wasn't sure how I was going to start and I felt a bit funny coming of the bend, but I finished it feeling strong.

"It's my quickest opening to the season and we haven't even started speed work yet, so I'm hoping there is a lot more to come when we do start." Malcolm explained why he had taken the decision to run the 100m, which he won in a time of 10.29 secs leaving John Barbour and Marlon Devonish trailing in his wake.

He said: "When I was a junior I was so far ahead that I was more relaxed, but as a senior you need to be more powerful, it's an intense pressure, so I'm looking to sort my 100ms out to improve the 200m.

"But I didn't expect to run that quickly over 100m and we have done things a little different this year.

"I'm sure I'll be sore afterwards, because I haven't done any work from the blocks."

Coach Jock Anderson had the glow of a happy man and said there is much more to come from the Newport flier, who is in the best shape of his career and with a bit of luck a medal at the World Championships this summer could be in the offering.

He said: "He ran well, I thought he'd run as well as that, there's plenty more to come.

"He's in good shape, the physio from UK Athletics who screened him for the season said he is in the best shape he has ever been, so its looking good.

"I never had any doubt that he'd break Bennett's record, but I never told him that before mind!

"I can't see any reason why he couldn't get a medal at the Championships, as long as he stays free from injury."
