WALES international Byron Hayward is joining Pontypool as player/fitness coach after turning down the chance to move to Cardiff.
Hayward wants to help Pontypool back into the top flight of Welsh rugby, and in order to achieve that aim has opted out on the final year of his contract with Gloucester.
Gwent-born Hayward has been with leading English team Gloucester for two years after spending a season with Llanelli when he decided to leave Ebbw Vale.
Now he is coming back to his native county with a target in mind. "I hope there is promotion at the end of next season and that I can help Pontypool get back in the premier division," he said.
"I could have gone to Cardiff or Pontypridd, but this seemed more of a long term future.
"I've know Bob Jude (Pontypool benefactor) a long time and he's very ambitious. I've also worked with Steve Jones (head coach) and I've got a lot of time and respect for him.
"I had another year on my contract with Gloucester, but they agreed to let me go if it was to a Welsh First Division club otherwise they would have asked for a transfer fee.
"I could go to Cardiff and have an easy life sitting on the bench and taking the money.
"But I'd rather have the satisfaction of helping Pontypool get back up there."
Hayward will be part time as a player/fitness coach and will resume his job as a plasterer part time.
