LLANWERN are through to the second round of Victory Shield foursomes golf tournament for club pairs, but only after a struggle with Gwent rivals Dewstow.>
Stuart Westley and Jonathan Davidson won their second successive game at the 20th and will now face Pontnewydd for a place in the last 16.
They had defeated Woodlake Park at the second extra hole and then handed out the same treatment to Dewstow in the first round proper.
Newport, with the strong pairing of Brian Lee and Gareth Hughes, overcame Virginia Park three and two at Radyr following their preliminary round defeat of Pontypool.
Now Newport, among the favourites to capture the shield a year after winning the Welsh team championship, come up against Monmouthshire, who are represented this summer by Jon Griffiths and Martin Kirby. They beat Whitehall by six and four to reach round two.
Current Welsh boys champion Robert Narduzzo and Steve Vickery had quite a battle at Whitchurch with Rhondda's Jonathan Stone and Justin Reed before emerging victorious on the home green and booking for themselves a match against Pontypridd.
Last year's winners North Wales are still going strong having disposed of Vale of Llangollen and Conwy.
