A POPULAR Gwent fun run threatened by foot-and-mouth looks set to go ahead as planned.
Organisers feared the Abergavenny Scouts annual fundraising 10K road race and 4K fun run may have to be scrapped due to movement restrictions imposed following the foot-and-mouth outbreak.
But the races through Abergavenny look to have beaten the crisis with Monmouthshire Trading Standards giving them the all clear - if there is not another outbreak in the area before the event on May 20.
Proceeds raised from both races go to Abergavenny Scouts, Cubs and Beaver Groups and sponsorship forms for the event which around 150 competitors last year are now available.
Delighted the event was on track was Charles Thomas, chairman of Abergavenny Scout Group's executive committee.
He told the Argus: "We had feared the event may have to be cancelled due to the foot-and-mouth crisis but we have been in touch with Monmouthshire Trading Standards department every day and so long as there is not another outbreak before the day the races can go ahead.
"Those wishing to participate can chose either to compete in the 4K race around Abergavenny, which is about two and half miles, or the 10K race which is about six and half miles.
"Anyone can enter - either paying to be a competitor or as a sponsored runner. The money raised from the day goes towards the upkeep of the scouts, cubs and beavers group."
Both races start at 10.30am from Abergavenny Leisure Centre and in the 10K race teams of six are encouraged to keep for a number of prizes.
The cost to enter is £5 (£4 affiliated club members) but competitors being sponsored to race can run for free.
