GWENT schools under-19s are just one game away from making history as they bid to become the first county from outside England to win the English Schools FA's Premier League Trophy.

With virtually the whole side from Hartridge High School's football academy, Gwent face Humberside in the final today (4pm) at Derby County's Baseball Ground in what captain Ryan Dorrian describes as a "Wales v England international."

With the Gwent squad boasting five under-18 Wales internationals including Dorrian, the youngster is well placed to judge the importance of the game having secured himself a regular spot in the Newport County first team this season.

He said: "It's going to be like a Wales - England international for the team, it's probably the biggest game of my career."

The side, coached by Newport County's Head of Youth Development Glyn Jones and manager Roger Skyrme, made the trip north last night before attending a special dinner at Derby's new Pride Park stadium.

"It's an honour to be invited into the competition, especially as we are a non-English team and the way the side have performed this season is a tribute to Glyn and Roger, " Dorrian added.

Humberside are tough opponents with two England junior internationals in their team, but Gwent include four of the Wales under-18 side that drew 1-1 with England at Swindon on Friday.

Coach Glyn Jones said: "This is a magnificent achievement to reach the final and I don't think people in Newport realise it.

"We have prepared for this as well as we can and it shows the quality of the squad that we even have a Wales junior international (Rhys Jones) on the bench."
