STAFF at Woodland Junior School in Cwmbran were preparing to tell pupils today about the death of their popular headmaster at the weekend.

Graham Baldwin, 54, was playing cricket for Monkside when he left the field complaining of illness. Mr Baldwin was discovered on the floor of the dressing room by a batsman from the opposing team.

An ambulance crew tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead on arrival at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny. Roger Steven- son, deputy head, said today: "We are holding a special assembly first thing this morning. We are waiting for the children to arrive so we can comfort them."

He said the infants and junior schools will be holding separate assemblies today.

Mr Stevenson paid tribute to his former colleague. "We are a happy school which he led.

"He will be sorely missed. He was a warm and generous teacher. He left here Friday happy and content."
