Newport speedway rider Karl Mason may not have suffered any broken bones after his high-speed crash while riding at reserve for the Wasps in their home Premier League match with Rye House, the title-chasing Premier League outfit, at the Hayley Stadium on Sunday.
Mason whacked the safety fence on the pits bend in the first lap of heat 12 and the meeting was held up for 15 minutes while he was treated on the track.
He was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital but later released with his left leg heavily strapped and told to return once the swelling has reduced.
Mason was due to have ridden for the Mavericks in their meeting with Rye House Raiders which followed the main meeting.
Peter Towersey, Mavericks team manager, said: "The leg was X-rayed on Sunday and scanned and they were confident nothing was broken but until the swelling is reduced we will not know for sure. However, it is suspected he has suffered ligament damage."
Mavericks moved up a place in the Conference League after collecting three points from the Raiders - two for a win and the bonus point for an aggregate success - taking them within sight of Boston, their opponents at the King's Lynn track on Sunday evening.
Mavericks' remaining programme: Sunday, Boston (away); September 23, Weymouth (away), Knock-out Cup, semi-final, first leg; September 29, Oxford (away), provisional; October 1, Armadale (away); October 9, Weymouth (home), double header, Knock-out Cup, semi-final, second leg followed by Conference League; October 16, Buxton (home, provisional.
