A NEWPORT rugby coach whose team only have a pitch to their name says the growing popularity for the sport means a clubhouse is urgently needed.
St Joseph's (Casnewydd) RFC mini junior and youth club is family-orientated with a history that dates back 25 years. The club has grown from one side to eight and more Gwent boys are signing up every week.
Now the team want a clubhouse to call their own.
Coach and club secretary Nigel Levi said the lack of club identity causes problems retaining players.
He said: "All ages are going from strength to strength and we are the only club on the west side serving Duffryn.Up to 200 children play over the weekends, St Joseph's School have been great in helping us but we need a club of our own.
"Standing in the rain at the side of a pitch is disheartening."
The club would ideally need three pitches, a clubhouse, changing facilities, facilities to entertain visiting teams and car parking.
"The key thing for our teams is getting an identity, we have children as young as eight to 18 who are keen to learn rugby," added Mr Levi.
If anyone can help the club, call Mr Levi on 01495 750060, or club chairman Peter Church 01633 664416.
