IT is close to one of Newport's most historic sites, but a new building can stand with pride in its own right.
Caerleon Pavilion, just 75 metres from the Roman Amphitheatre, was named Building of the Year by the Consortium of Local Authorities.
Wales environment minister AM Carwyn Jones came to Caerleon to honour the pavilion, which is on playing fields used for rugby, football and cricket.
Both home and visiting teams are able to use the four separate changing-rooms, with self-contained shower areas, official's room and kitchen facilities.
Caerleon Pavilion, which was opened in 2004 by former Newport Gwent Dragon star Percy Montgomery, also houses an exhibition space and public toilets.
The project involved different departments within the city council.
