WHEN the tsunami struck south east Asia on Boxing Day last year, many people reached into their pockets to help the relief effort.
But few reacted as quickly as the landlord and landlady of the Handpost pub in Stow Hill, Newport, Keith and Jill Moon.
As soon as they heard what had happened they decided they wanted to do something to help - and now their quick reactions have won them an award.
Keith explained: "When we saw what happened on the news, we decided right away we wanted to do something to help those people.
"So we organised a charity auction and sold off all sorts of items.
"I think we managed to do it in about five or six days, and we raised a total of £6,000.
"We had great items to sell, everyone was really helpful. There were things like a three-piece suite and sporting memorabilia, and we had a great night.
"I think we got the Charity Pub of the Year award because of that event, plus all the other charity work we've done over the year.
"We have to say a big thank you to all our customers who are so generous and supportive, and all the businesses who gave such good items."
The award came from the Spirit Group, which owns the Handpost and is one of the biggest companies of its kind in Britain.
