LYNNE Mattravers sometimes has to pinch herself to make sure she's not dreaming. She earns a living introducing others to the benefits of fresh air and exercise while taking in some of Gwent's most spectacular surroundings.
The 54-year-old grandmother of one turned her back on her job as a quality development manager with ELWA after getting fed up with the paperwork.
Now she runs a healthy walking scheme for Torfaen council. "It's wonderful - I can't believe it's real sometimes," said Lynne, who has lived in Blaenavon all her life.
She added: "I enjoy working with people - I'm a people person really. When that started to go out of my previous job, and the opportunity for voluntary redundancy came up I took it. "I saw the community walks job advertised, and thought 'how wonderful'."
Lynne started work on a part time basis in last February, but quickly ended up working full-time.
Her walking groups average about 10, and she takes four walks each week in Blaenavon, Garndiffaith, Trevethin, and Cwmbran.
Most of those taking part are older people, referred by their GP for more exercise, though anyone is welcome. "When people are referred by their GP they undergo a range of assessments to work out what is needed and what they can manage walking-wise," said Lynne.
She added: "The programme caters for those recovering from coronary heart disease, those who are battling obesity, or suffering from diabetes, as well as people suffering from depression. "Just being outdoors tends to make people feel much better, and there's the social aspect too." Lynne has come up with a number of different walks for different abilities, in each of the four locations. "There's a cup of tea or coffee at the end just to add that bit of incentive," she said.
And Lynne has also drafted in volunteer walk leaders to help with the programme. She added: "The idea is to have a front leader and a back leader, so if anyone wants to throw the towel in after a certain point, one of the volunteers can lead them back."
The job is funded until the end of 2006, but Lynne is confident the post can be renewed. "It's a wonderful way to earn a living - I have to pinch myself sometimes," she added. Iris Forward received a doctor's referral for the scheme after she gave up smoking. "I have enjoyed every minute of it. I thought I knew Blaenavon inside out but it's surprising what you don't know about your own town," said the grandmother of four.
She added: "I had put on a stone, and already needed to lose a stone. "Now I've lost eight pounds since I started walking, combined with going to the gym as well. "The walks are very informative. I've lived in Blaenavon all my life and I learned things I'd never dreamed of. "They are nice people, you get a nice cup of tea. It beats lying about on the settee after dinner, and gets you out of the house. Iris lives in Kennard Close, Blaenavon. "It's left me feeling on top of the world - it's opened my eyes," she said.
