NOISY roadworks are keeping Newport residents awake at night, leaving some children so tired that they are unable to attend school, it is claimed. Work is being carried out on the A467 dual carriageway, which runs near Tulip Walk, Afon Village, Rogerstone.

Resident Peter Capnos-Taylor claims residents put up with large noisy machines scraping the road at night, diggers, and asphalt machines up until 3am.

His son's bedroom is facing the roadworks, and he says a noise mitigation fence, to muffle traffic sounds, was not put in place, meaning residents suffer.

Design manager Mr Capnos-Taylor said: "We don't mind the works, they have to be done, but why should they go on in the night? There is no great volume of traffic on that road so there is no excuse."

Rogerstone councillor Stephen Jones is calling for the council to put up a noise reduction fence immediately.

He said: "I am concerned about the roadworks, they are unsociable and there needs to be a fence to reduce the noise impact on residents."

Mr Capnos-Taylor's four-year-old son, Alex, was recently kept up all night by the sound of scraping. He says the disturbance cannot go on any longer.

He said: "There are 17 children on this site, we are being kept awake and it's been going on for three months.

"It's a load of rubbish that they need to do it at night." A council spokesman said: "The A467 dual carriageway is a traffic-sensitive route, and as such night-time working is custom and practice.

"The council is liaising with the developers to address planning issues surrounding noise mitigation measures."
