A SHOCKED couple have called for a brand of baby food to be withdrawn after their daughter almost ate a piece of metal contained in one of the jars.

Stefan Jarman and his partner Joanna Giles, both 22, were stunned when they found the screw-like object in a jar of Boots Organic Spaghetti Bolognese just before feeding it to 10-month-old Rhiannon.

They have now asked the Cwmbran store, where they bought the jar a couple of days ago, to remove the food from its shelves.

Boots says it takes complaints "extremely seriously" and have launched an investigation.

A spokesman for the company said they needed to see what the metal object was before deciding what to do.

"I poured it into a bowl and heated it in the microwave," said Mr Jarman, of Llewellyn Road, Cwmbran. "I noticed the piece of metal when I was halfway through feeding her.

"When we picked it out it just broke in half. It could have killed her and the metal could have made the microwave blow up."

Miss Giles, who also has a two-year-old daughter, Lydia, with her partner and was due to give birth to their third child at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny today, said the discovery had caused her a lot of stress.

The mother-of-two has phoned Boots to complain. She was told to send the empty jar and piece of metal to them. She was also offered gift vouchers to cover the cost of other jars in her cupboard. "There is no way I'm going to feed her with the food again," she said.

"I'm worried other jars could have metal in them so I think this particular batch should be removed."

A spokesman for Boots said the product would not be withdrawn until the investigation was complete.

"Boots takes any complaints about the quality of its products extremely seriously, and in particular baby food products," she said.

"We advised Ms Giles that we would like to see both the empty jar and the object found as quickly as possible so we can carry out an immediate investigation."
