A COUNCILLOR campaigning for speed restrictions on the road where a Gwent football star was injured in a crash renewed her call for action yesterday.
Although it is not yet known if speed was an issue in the crash, county councillor Eileen Goodrich is angry that calls for speed restrictions on the road after a number of previous accidents at the site were ignored.
Rising star Lloyd Jenkins, 18, from Blaenavon was one of four young Cardiff city footballers hurt when a car was in collision with a lorry in Monmouth on Monday.
All four had to be cut from the wreckage following the crash on the northbound carriageway of the A40 near the traffic lights.
Mr Jenkins is still in Abergavenny's Nevill Hall Hospital with minor injuries. His condition is described as comfortable.
Team mate midfielder Nicky Fish, 21, is still in a critical condition in intensive care.
Stuart Fleetwood, 19, and Anthony Taylor, 19, were released after receiving treatment.
The players had been at a reserves match in Hereford before the accident. Many fans left messages of support and best wishes on the Cardiff City website but one also asked why a coach was not provided for the reserve team.
Councillor Goodrich, a leading member of the Drop it to 40 campaign, said: "What we need is a 40mph restriction from the tunnels coming from Cardiff right up to the Dixton roundabout.
"We want Transport Minister Andrew Davies to come to Monmouth to see for himself the dangers of the road and particularly of the traffic lights and junction."
She feels the dual carriageway with its current 70mph limit amounts to having a motorway in one of Monmouth's busiest areas.
A National Assembly spokesman said: "While it would be inappropriate to comment on this accident while the investigation is ongoing, there are currently no plans to introduce a speed restriction.
"However, we will take appropriate action if necessary when we have all the information from this incident."
Meanwhile friends of Lloyd Jenkins are hoping he makes a quick recovery.
Steve Ward secretary of the Blaenavon Blues, where Mr Jenkins played as an U12, said: "Everyone at the club is so proud of Lloyd playing for Cardiff and getting his Wales call-up. We are all thinking of him and his parents and hope he'll be back on the pitch soon."
The good wishes were echoed by staff at Abersychan School, where Mr Jenkins studied until he was 16.
Witnesses to the collision should call Gwent Police on 01633 838111 or the Collision Investigation Unit on 01633 643091.
