A NEWPORT man was savagely beaten by two men, while three others watched, after bursting into his flat on New Year's Eve.
Jay Davies, 19, of Bettws, was covered in blood after being punched, kicked, stamped on and whipped with a stick across his back.
His pregnant girlfriend, Stacey Pritchard, 17, was punched in her windpipe as she tried to help him.
She tried to call the police for help on her mobile phone before the gang turned on her.
Mr Davies (pictured) said the attack, carried out by two men while another three looked on, was unprovoked and lasted about 30 minutes.
The gang eventually left his flat in Leach Road at around 6pm when they thought the police were on their way.
Yesterday the couple returned to Mr Davies' flat.
The lounge carpet was covered with large patches of dried blood and the sofa was caked with blood.
Mr Davies said: "I thought I was going to die. I literally thought they aren't going to stop until I'm dead."
Ms Pritchard described the gang's attack which happened as the couple were relaxing in the flat: "They kicked the ground floor door down after about three attempts and came charging up the stairs.
"One of them punched Jay in the face and head and when he hit the floor, he started stamping on his head. Then he broke the handle of the sweeping brush and started beating Jay with that across his back.
"I was crying my eyes out and I tried to call the police on my mobile phone but the man then punched me in the throat.
"They tried to take the phone off me but they couldn't get it out of my grip."
She said the main attacker was joined by another man who kicked her boyfriend.
Ms Pritchard said: "Jay was screaming out that he needed an ambulance.
"They only left when one of them said, 'Come on let's get out of here. The coppers will be on their way.'"
Mr Davies and his partner were taken to the city's Royal Gwent Hospital. Mr Davies was treated for his injuries which included bruising to his head, hands and ear as well as lash marks on his back.
Ms Pritchard will have to undergo an emergency scan tomorrow to ensure her baby has not been harmed.
Mr Davies said the attack has forced him to leave Bettws: "It was very traumatic and there is no way I can stay here."
Gwent police confirmed a man was assaulted and are appealing for witnesses to call them on 01633 838111.
l Two people are helping police with their inquiries after being arrested.
