NEWPORT today announced it hopes to jointly bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Bob Bright, leader of Newport City Council, said: "We will be jointly with our other two cities in Wales, Cardiff and Swansea, making a bid to host the Commonwealth games.
"The three cities have got together and had initial talks about a joint bid for the Commonwealth Games.
"It is going to cost millions of pounds but the aim is that we would like to have it. If we can make it happen we will make it happen.
"The times dates and costs have to be worked out yet but we have fantastic facilities down here in Newport now."
So far, Glasgow is the only other city which has announced its intention to enter a bid for the 2014 games.
Phil Carling, chairman of the Sports Council for Wales, said:"This is the first I have heard of it but any bid would have to go through the Commonwealth Games council.
"If they were content with it then I'm sure they would get support.
"If it could possibly come to Wales it would be quite incredible, but it is an immense project to undertake and the National Assembly I'm sure would have to be involved."
