A NEWPORT taxi driver is being urged to come forward following an incident in which a teenager suffered serious injuries.

Following a night out in Newport on December 18, a 19-year-old man and his 24-year-old friend left a gig at Le Pub in Caxton Street at 2am and flagged down a taxi.

It took them to their home town of Barry and dropped them off near the council docks offices but there was then a brief dispute, said South Wales Police.

A police spokesman said the taxi then made off and collided with the 19-year-old man.

He suffered serious injuries, including two fractures to his pelvis and a dislocated hip, and spent the Christmas period in hospital.

DS David Knowles, of South Wales Police, said: "The taxi has been captured on CCTV exiting Sainsbury supermarket filling station in Newport prior to driving to the Barry area."

He said the driver was described as an Asian male, aged about 30 with short-cropped, black hair and unshaven.

"We are appealing to the taxi driver to come forward and we're appealing to the public for witnesses and information."

Anyone who can help the police with their investigation into the incident can contact Barry CID on 01446 731606 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
