FURIOUS Newport County boss Peter Beadle is demanding an improvement from his under-fire players, starting at home against League One outfit Wrexham in the FAW Premier Cup tonight (kick-off 7pm).
Beadle was fuming after his side slumped to bottom of the Nationwide Conference South with a dismal defeat at rivals Carshalton on Saturday and is keen to stress to his players that no-one in the County squad is safe from the axe.
Beadle is likely to make several changes for the game with Wrexham and is insisting that the passion and endeavour shown in most of the games since he took charge is immediately restored.
"The players let down the supporters and the club with a diabolical performance and everyone with the exception of Tony Pennock has to take a long hard look at themselves," he said.
"I handed out the wages this week and asked all of the boys if they honestly thought they deserved to be paid and I told them in no uncertain terms I didn't think they did.
"I can only prepare them so much, when they are out on the pitch the players have to take some responsibility and I want to see that happening very quickly.
"I told the chairman in the week that apart from wanting a central defender and another striker, I was relatively happy with the squad I had.
"However, looking at Saturday's performance, any of the players couldn't complain if they were dropped and maybe we have to look at bringing in more new players."
Beadle is set to make changes for tonight's tie, although only Paul Cochlin (knee injury) and striker Craig Hughes (cup-tied) are unavailable.
New signing Stuart Edwards is likely to get a start in defence and non-contract signing Gary Fisken - the midfielder who joined County late on Friday afternoon following spells with Watford and Swansea - will also start.
Wrexham manager Dennis Smith has eight senior players unavailable and has named a 16-man squad that includes five youth players.
County(from): Pennock, T Evans, Bater, Warton, Hillier, D Evans, M Hearne, N Davies, Williams, Jenkins, Fisken, Toppar, Bowen, O'Sullivan, Green, Prosser, Bradley
