NEWPORT County have appointed former player Scott Young as their new assistant manager, writes Michael Pearlman.

Young, best known from a long playing career with Cardiff City, will begin his role at the end of the week after doing a similar job for Ton Pentre.

He was signed by Peter Nicholas for County in 2004/5 but a back injury saw him retire. Meanwhile, boss Peter Beadle has admitted his team will pick itself ahead of tomorrow's Nationwide Conference South clash with Welling United at Spytty Park (kick-off 7.45pm).

Boss Beadle was a far happier manager than he has been in recent weeks after Saturday's 3-0 thumping of Maidenhead and will now look to field the same side.

"We changed our formation on Saturday as a reaction to the previous Saturday's defeat at Carshalton, but after the Maidenhead game there is no need to change things around," he said.

Beadle lined up on Saturday with a 4-3-1-2 formation - sacrificing width in midfield to allow Jason Bowen a free role behind strikers Matt Green and Craig Hughes - and will do so again, if Green overcomes a knee injury.

Cwmbran Town's trip to Cardiff Grange Quins tonight in the Welsh Premier League has been postponed because Leckwith Stadium is unavailable, completing a miserable few days for the Crows.

On Friday night the team had to postpone their fixture at Haverfordwest after two of the players' cars were involved in an accident.

No-one was seriously hurt in the smash but the players were too shaken to play the match. Things have now got even worse for the Crows following the postponement of tonight's game and a hefty fine from the Football Association of Wales.

Cwmbran have been fined £2000 for incidents relating to their FAW Premier Cup match with Merthyr Tydfil.

A £1000 fine was imposed because the ball boys failed to return the balls quickly enough, angering the Merthyr fans.

The Crows were further punished for failing to escort the officials off at half-time. Chairman Mike Lewis said: "We feel we are being made an example of, some Welsh Premier clubs don't even use ball boys. We have few officials and volunteers to carry out several tasks - we feel the fine imposed is excessive."

Half the fine is suspended, so Cwmbran must pay £1000.
