A JURY in the case of a Risca couple accused of murdering a former mine worker were continuing their deliberations today.
They retired yesterday afternoon. Paul Lewis, 55, and Kathleen Carey, 56, both of Elm Drive, plead not guilty to murdering 46-year-old Tony Jenkins. Mr Jenkins was found in his home in Holly Road, Risca, with 18 stab wounds to his head, torso, arms and legs.
Two of the wounds, the jury has heard, one to each lung, proved fatal. Prosecutor Ian Murphy, QC, said the two men fought in a dispute over cannabis, and during the struggle Carey armed herself with a small kitchen knife and delivered the lethal blows.
Lewis said that during the struggle he was not aware of any knife being used, and he said that the following morning at their home Carey confessed to him that she had delivered the blows and even showed him the knife.
A consultant psychiatrist, Alan Lillywhite, said that Carey was suffering from diminished responsibility by reason of brain damage, alcohol dependence and a personality disorder.
Her counsel, David Aubrey, QC, did not call her to give evidence.
