CROSS Keys centre or wing David Price sees no reason why the Pandy Park outfit shouldn't go all the way to the Konica-Minolta Cup final at the Millennium Stadium.
The 27-year-old has been playing better than ever this season, enjoying the occasional move back to the centre position he filled as a youth and at college with UWIC, and hopes to play a role in helping Keys make cup progress.
To do that they have to get past the First Division's third-placed side Whitland in their rearranged fourth round tie at Whitland tomorrow and then high-flying fellow Premier outfit Pontypridd at home.
But the player, born and now again living in Pontywaun, not far from the Cross Keys ground, and who scored a try when Keys beat Whitland 25-18 in their only previous cup meeting at Pandy Park in season 2002-2003, believes they can do so.
"We are pretty confident. I think there is a big difference between the divisions, though the closeness of games involving Premier sides and those in lower divisions last Saturday may suggest otherwise," said the former Wales Under-16s, Under-18s and youth player.
"Whitland are certainly not going to be a pushover but as long as we play as well as we can we will come out on top.
"We have been playing well and beating the likes of Newport, Pontypridd and Llanelli and are up there with the top four or five sides in the Premier Division.
"We have to make sure our attitude is right on Saturday, but if it is then we surely have enough quality and experience in the squad.
"There is a lot of confidence in the squad at the moment, confidence in our ability, confidence in the players around us and confidence in the coaches, and it's only going to get better with so many young players who are very, very good."
Price, who was also once a Wales Schools international 200m runner and a fair cricketer, expects Whitland to play a tight game with the emphasis on their front five.
"I think they'll play very similarly to Llandovery (who pipped Keys 11-6 in the league just under a fortnight ago) but we'll hope to play a running game and if we do that I don't think they'll be able to compete." Price, in his fifth season at Pandy Park, played virtually the first four seasons on the wing but this season has reverted largely to the centre position, though he is back on the wing tomorrow.
"I don't mind where I play as long as I'm playing regularly," he said, "but I do prefer playing at centre because you are involved more. The coaches have given me the opportunity to play there this season and If I've done a reasonable job for them than I'm happy."
He continued: "We definitely believe there is an opportunity for us to go all the way in the cup this season, but there are no easy games as I'm sure Whitland will be out to show us."
Keys keep the same team selected for the match when it was postponed last week, but Wayne Sims returns on the bench. Cross Keys: J Thomas, D Price, N Williams, D Dark, M McKee, S Mitchell, G Betts, I George, R Miller, R Cornock, S Marasco, M Curtis, R Peebles, T Lampard, W Thomas. Replacements: D Miles, J Pizey, W Sims, D Evans, R Williams, R Draper, J Price. Kick-off 2.3pm. Leave clubhouse 10.45am.
