A NEWPORT grandfather is to trek across the Himalayas to raise money for charity.
Mark Ashman, of Bethesda Place, Rogerstone, is to undertake the challenge in May for the National Autistic Society.
So far he has raised £1,700 by holding events such as car boot sales, but with a target of £2,500 he still has a way to go.
His deadline to raise the money is the end of February, and he is appealing for donations.
He said: "I've had tremendous support from local people. I'm aiming to raise awareness about autism."
The trek is more than 100 miles and will be done over six days. Mr Ashman, 44, who is a community support worker, has worked with autistic people for about five years, and is training for ten hours a week in preparation for the expedition.
He will be part of a group of 45 from the UK. Anyone who wants to make a donation can ring Mr Ashman on 07977 800223.
