TWO of Gwent's most prestigious shows are being combined to secure their futures.
Bedwellty Agricultural Show and Blackwood Big Balloon Festival will this yer b held over one bank holiday weekend.
Last April it was feared a lack of funding might mean Bedwellty Agricultural Show would not be able to continue.
Then Caerphilly council stepped in with a £10,000 grant - half of the £20,000 it cost to stage the show.
The annual event is in its 133rd year and attracts large crowds with livestock displays, horse exhibits, trade stands and craft stalls. In it's long history it attracted prominent figures such as David Broome and Colonel Harry Llewellyn.
But it's fortunes have suffered in recent years due to a decline in Gwent's agriculture industry .
It will no go ahead on the August Bank Holiday weekend the day before Blackwood Big Balloon festival, now in its fourth year.
Combining the two shows will ensure they are financially viable and the money saved will mean more funds can be spent on entertainment for both events.
The Bedwellty Show is planned for August 26 and the Big Balloon Festival for August 27 and 28.
Assistant tourism officer, Paul Hudson, said: "I think this move will go someway towards ensuring both these events are financially secure and preserving them for future generations to enjoy."
A council spokesman said: "Local residents will benefit from having one fun-filled weekend of varied entertainment and activity."
