YOUNG musicians hit all the right notes as they wowed audiences at a brass band festival.

Bands from across Gwent attended the event at Coleg Gwent Crosskeys campus on Saturday.

They included Newport Borough Band, Blaenavon Town Band and Cwmbran Youth Band.

The day was divided into three sections. Section three was non-competitive with bands playing an entertainment programme of their choice.

Bands who entered sections one and two competed for trophies and cash prizes. Again they played a programme of their choice.

The best soloists in each section were presented with trophies.

David Hayward was the compere for the festival and Steve Pritchard-Jones and Alan Morrison the adjudicators.

Festival organiser Alun Williams said the musical extravaganza was organised on the back of the success of last year's event.

Organised by the Gwent Music Support Service, Mr Williams said more than 20 bands entered.

* Swindon School of Brass Youth beat off competition to win section one, while Newport Borough Band won section two and Cwmbran Youth learners section won section three.

Rhys Jones, of Cwmtawe District Training Band, Robert Graham-White, of Caerleon Comprehensive School Band and Angie Rance of Mid Rhondda Juniors won individual awards for their solo performances.

Michael Davies, of Newport Borough Band, won the Con Buckley Memorial Trophy for helping to encourage youngsters to play musical instruments.
