MORE than 5,000 people took the plunge in the first two weeks of Newport's new pool opening.
The 25 metre, eight-lane competition pool is the newest addition to Newport's International Sports Village and is already proving popular. It was opened on January 6 by mayor Ken Critchley and has a fitness suite, teaching pool and more than 500 seats for spectators.
The pool also meets the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act regulations making it accessible for everybody.
Councillor Ron Jones, cabinet member for culture and recreation, said: "We have had some excellent feedback from people who are really impressed with the new pool.
"It is also great to see clubs such as water polo and canoeing being able to take advantage of the pool's moveable floor which opens it up to a much wider range of water sports." Schools also visit.
A children's play area and multi-use games area next to the swimming pool will also open soon.
