PARENTS say school bosses should change their minds about closing Argoed Primary because of its recent glowing inspection report.
The school was inspected in November and the report says the school - with just 44 pupils - gives good value for money.
It adds that "outstanding teaching" was seen in a number of lessons - notably maths - while the provision for pupils with additional learning needs was also described as "outstanding".
Caerphilly council is proposing to close the school in 2007, with pupils to be transferred to Markham Primary.
Argoed head teacher Trisha Walters said the school was "delighted" to receive such a positive report.
"This inspection took place at a particularly traumatic time when the school is under consultation as to its viability in remaining open.
"This outcome pays tribute to the dedication and professionalism of the staff and their care and commitment to the children of Argoed and the wider community."
The report states Argoed is a good school, with no significant shortcomings.
"An outstanding feature is the very good care, support and guidance given to pupils," it says. "During their time at the school pupils make good progress and generally achieve good standards in their work."
The report points out that in 2005 national tests for Key stage two pupils, 67 per cent achieved level four or better in maths, 80 per cent in science, and 63 per cent in English. And 33 per cent achieved the higher level five in mathematics this year.
"Results in the core subjects show standards have remained broadly average over the last three years.
"Pupils' good behaviour contributes effectively to their good progress and development."
The report added: "An outstanding feature of all teaching is the good working relationships teachers and support staff have with pupils."
Frances Thompson, chairwoman of the governors and mother of two children at Argoed, said: "It is an outstanding report and simply confirms what we already knew. The inspectors were very complimentary about the school, the teachers and the pupils."
Parent Rebecca Williams said: "I think it is purely on financial grounds that they are suggesting closing Argoed."
