MORE than 1,200 youngsters gathered in Newport for one of Britain's largest cheerleading events yesterday.
The Western Classic 2006, held in the Newport Centre, included teams called the Rhondda Rockets, Cardiff Cougars Allstars and the Birmingham Pussycats.
The event followed international standards with performances scored for technique, precision and creativity.
British Cheerleading Association director Bob Kiralfy said: "The Western Classic grows again with 33 clubs entering 92 competitive routines - it is the showcase for cheerleading in Wales and the South West.
"Our aim is to make every cheerleader feel like a star, in front of the most appreciative audience you could ever wish for."
He added that four years ago the Western Classic was the smallest regional but is now one of Britain's largest cheerleading events.
