Two treats from the southern hemisphere
35 South £3.49 Sainsburys
If you are looking for wines that represent good value and reasonable quality then look no further than Chile.
This cabernet sauvignon from the Central Valley is reasonably full-bodied with a dark cherry colour.
It displays blackcurrants and oak flavours but with a slight green stalky flavour which helps to give the wine its rustic character.
Penfolds Rawsons Retreat 2004 £5.99 widely available
A good introduction to the world of Australian wine from a company that is part of the Southcorp Wines group. Penfolds is one of the dominant forces in the Australian wine industry and has shown that quality can go hand in hand with quantity.
This shiraz/cabernet blend exhibits ripe plum and cranberry flavours with creamy vanilla.
A good value red ideal for everyday drinking or for the dining table.
