GWENT Paralympic swimming gold-medallist Gareth Duke could be back in training in two months after a successful kidney transplant.
Gareth Duke, 19, is back home in Maendy Way, Pontnewydd, Cwmbran, after the transplant on February 13. The operation used an organ donated by his father, Trevor Myers, 52.
There were fears his body was rejecting his new kidney but he now seems to be recovering well.
Gareth said: "They say I should be able to start training again in eight weeks, depending on how I feel.
"At the moment I'm fine but it's still a bit painful. I'm missing training but I'm enjoying having my family look after me."
Gareth hit the headlines in 2004 by claiming a gold medal at the Athens Paralympics.
In August, the Argus exclusively revealed Gareth needed an urgent transplant as his kidneys were progressively failing due to the Alport's syndrome he suffers from due to his dwarfism.
He was placed on temporary dialysis in February after his kidney performance deteriorated.
