DRAGONS and Wales second-row Ian Gough has launched a passionate defence of his regional and national team-mate Michael Owen.

Owen has come under criticism this week from some pundits who have suggested that the Wales captain should be dropped for either Gareth Delve or Alix Popham for Saturday's RBS Six Nations clash against Italy at the Millennium Stadium.

But Gough insists that Owen has the backing of the whole squad and has defended his place in Saturday's starting line-up.

He said: "I've know Michael for a long time, ever since our Ponty days and of course I play with him for the Dragons.

"He is a great character and is an awesome player and I don't know why he has come in for such criticism.

"I couldn't cope with it and for such a young lad he does a remarkable job. He has the respect off the older heads in the squad which speaks volumes.

"He is a great captain and brings a lot to the table. I feel sorry for him because it is a tough old job and I know I couldn't do it.

"It seems like we are all in the firing line and it is his turn to be shot down, next week it will be someone else's turn."

Wales coach Scott Johnson was under pressure to make major changes after they were humbled in Ireland nearly two weeks ago.

But Johnson has kept faith with that side, including Michael Owen and he is backing his captain all the way.

He said: "I have no doubts about the abilities of Michael Owen and the squad all have confidence in him.

"They all want him in the squad and that is the most important accolade.

"He is a world class player and has the type of skill and abilities that any international side would want, and I'm happy with his form and how he is playing."

Owen himself is comfortable with his position in the side and doesn't feel his place is under threat.

He said: "I really haven't paid too much attention to what people have been saying. "It seems as if this week it is my time to be criticised and next week it will be someone else's.

"I'm happy with my form, I've put in some good performances and I'm comfortable with my position in the team."

Gough lines-up at second row alongside Robert Sidoli and he acknowledges that there will need to be a huge improvement from their last performance against Ireland.

He said: "We all realise that there will need to be a big step up.

"I don't think we got enough credit after the Scotland victory because their late two tries took the shine off, but that is the level we need to reach."
