THE British Red Cross' new Welsh headquarters is to be built in Newport. Planning permission for the 1,014sqm building in George Street is granted and work is expected to start on the site at the end of this month.
The headquarters are due to be up and running by the end of the year in the building which will feature an integral garage and 18 additional off-street parking spaces.
This centre will replace the charity's current premises in Newport's Stow Park Circle, currently the Welsh HQ.
A spokesman said that building was not well-suited to the needs of the charity, as it is converted from a residential house.
City centre regeneration group Newport Unlimited supported the application for the new building, which will be in one of the city's regeneration target areas.
Erryl Heath, cabinet member for development and employment, said: "The British Red Cross provides an invaluable service, helping thousands of people throughout the country and providing first aid cover at many public events. I am confident that this development will enhance Newport's glowing reputation as a growing city with excellent opportunities for businesses."
British Red Cross Director Wales Jeffrey Collins said: "We are delighted that Newport will be home to our new headquarters.
"We look forward to working with the people of Newport to improve, enhance, and expand our services in Wales."
More than 60,000 people in Wales benefit from the British Red Cross's work. The group has more than 3,000 volunteers in Wales.
Mr Collins said: "In Newport and the surrounding area we already have extensive medical loan facilities, home from hospital schemes and an extensive first aid training programme."
