The St David's Hall Orchestral Concert Series brings a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience to Cardiff on Saturday, March 25 (7.30 pm), with a performance of Shakespeare's magical play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, accompanied by Mendelssohn's complete incidental music.
This unique production promises to be one of the highlights of the year, with the City of London Sinfonia conducted by Douglas Boyd and the Royal Shakespeare Company directed by Jonathan Best plus the City of London Sinfonia Voices.
Few plays summon up the magic and fantasy of a summer night as does Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Over 200 years after it was written, the 17-year-old Mendelssohn miraculously evoked the poetry of the play in his own Midsummer Night's Dream Overture, later adding music for the rest of the play.
Although audiences often hear the overture in the concert hall and the composer's famous Wedding March, Mendelssohn in fact wrote almost an hour's worth of music to accompany the play.
Today, it is not often possible to stage the theatrical experience that audiences in Mendelssohn's day would have taken for granted, with the performance of play accompanied by a full orchestra.
This performance at St David's Hall of these two magical works performed together promises to be an unforgettable evening and a highlight of this year's Orchestral Concert Series.
Tickets for the evening, priced £10 to £29 with reductions available, are now on sale from the St David's Hall Box Office on 029 2087 8444 or Book Online at www.stdavidshallcardiff.co.uk
