A silver coin, probably intended as a good luck charm which was found embedded in the keel of the Newport Ship, is casting new light on the origins of the historic vessel.
The city council's ship recording team have discovered the coin, which is French, embedded in one of the wooden timbers. It was wrapped in tarred caulking and was deliberately placed in the keel of the ship.
The restoration project recently received a boost when it was awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Jennifer Stewart, HLF manager for Wales, said: "It is fantastic news that the restoration team is already uncovering clues to the vessel's historic past."
"This is one of the most important archeological finds in Wales," she said.
