Our canine friends took centre-stage in a Gwent town during a dog awareness day on Saturday.

More than 100 owners and their pets braved the chilly weather to take part in the event promoting responsible dog ownership in Gwent Square, Cwmbran.

Wardens from Torfaen council's environmental services team were busy providing a free microchipping service, while members of Ponthir Canine Society gave demonstrations in dog training and basic obedience.

Torfaen councillor Mervyn Reece was on hand with a microphone to introduce the event.

"The idea is that when out walking the dog, for example, you take it for a walk, not the other way round," said Councillor Reece, the former head trainer of Cwmbran and District Dog Training Club.

"We're also encouraging owners to clean up the mess if their dog happens to foul a public park or footpath."

'Clean up after your dog' bags were handed out by Cwmbran community council as notices reminded owners of the £75 fine for allowing their pet to foul a footpath or grass verge.

Fundraisers from animal welfare groups also attended including All Creatures Great and Small, the animal sanctuary in Llanfrechfa; the RSPCA and Greyhound Welfare.
