THE family of Commonwealth boxing contender Mo Nasir says he wants to bring gold home for the people of Wales.

The Yemen-born 20-year-old, of Alice Street, Pill, is already guaranteed Commonwealth bronze after securing a place in tomorrow's light flyweight semi-final in Melbourne.

But his father, Abdul, said last night that Mo is determined to push for more.

"He's proud to be Welsh and he wants to do well for Wales," said Abdul, 50.

"He's determined to come back with the gold." Abdul spoke to Mo yesterday following his quarter-final victory over Pakistani Mu Nisar. He says he prays for him during matches.

His younger brother, Ayed, is also a keen boxer and watched a tape of Mo's latest fight with his class at Duffryn High School.

"We were all cheering for him," he said. "Everyone is just so proud." The head teacher of Duffryn High School, Jon Wilson, where Mo was a pupil until three years ago, said the whole school was backing Mo for gold.

Roy Chambers, chairman of St Joseph's Club and the Welsh Boxing Association, thinks Mo will bring home the gold medal.

"He's grown in stature and confidence over the last year and he can do it," he said.
