NEWPORT Everest Group Wasps will be hoping to build on Sunday's last-heat success when they travel to take on King's Lynn in the Premier Trophy tonight (tapes up 7.30pm).

The Wasps edged out the Isle of Wight 47-42 to get their home start to the season off to a flier and now attempt to carry their form forward to the meeting with the Stars.

Promoter Tim Stone said: "They are ably led by Tomas Topinka and their track is fast, grippy and bigger than ours so it requires a different technique.

"But we are going there to get points, and the return leg is on Sunday so the whole round with King's Lynn is sorted within a couple of days."

The Wasps were impressive in the win over the Islanders, although it still required a fine performance from Craig Watson (pictured) and Neil Collins in the final heat to seal the victory.

The pair headed into the last race with the teams separated by just three points but a win from Australian Watson and a third from Collins did the job for Newport.

"The Isle of Wight always give us a good match at the Hayley Stadium and I knew it would be a tough encounter," said Stone.

"It was a good performance from the team as they bed in for the start of the year, and it was a good win with some exciting moments.

"There were a lot of positives out of the meeting and I think it was the strength in depth of the team that made the result."

It was a tough welcome to the Premier Trophy for newcomer Sam Hurst, who suffered a crash when in second behind Watson and ahead of a pair of Islanders.

Stone said: "It was unfortunate for Sam because he was in a good position. But over the course of the season Sam, and Billy Legg, will grow into it."
