A CRUCIAL piece of one of Newport's important regeneration projects was transported to its new home yesterday.

The huge central section of the new foot and cycle bridge was taken from Rowecord Engineering, Pill, to near Newport Centre.

A 44-metre (144 ft) long lorry - nearly four times the usual length - was needed to move the 26-metre (85 ft) piece of decking.

It took about an hour to make the journey along Usk Way and the M4 before travelling down Heidenheim Drive and into the city centre.

Constructing the £5 million bridge across the River Usk - an impressive structure featuring four massive crane-like masts - is due to begin soon and should open to pedestrians and cyclists in the summer.

Argus readers have sent in their suggestions for the name of the new bridge and the final decision will be made by the city council which is a partner in the scheme with the WDA and regeneration company Newport Unlimited.

John Burrows, Newport Unlimited chief executive, said: "The transportation of the central section of decking is the first part of an exciting journey of the construction of the Newport's new iconic foot and cycle bridge, that will change the skyline of the city forever."

He added it would play a crucial part in the regeneration of the city, linking the two sides of the River Usk and creating a quick and safe way for pedestrians to travel right into the city's new retail heart.

"Over the next month, we will see the bridge gradually taking shape, eventually standing tall as a potent symbol of the city's overall regeneration."
