Newport Everest Group Wasps look to build on their encouraging start to the season when they take on Premier League new boys Mildenhall in the Premier Trophy at the Hayley Stadium on Sunday (tapes-up 2.30pm).
Wasps had an encouraging opening home win over the Isle of Wight and gave an excellent showing at King's Lynn, losing by only eight points.
But, as with the Islanders, Wasps can expect another tough test. Mildenhall sent out an early warning of their intent with an opening Trophy success against the Isle of Wight, winning by a 24-point margin, former Newport rider Jon Armstrong scoring a paid dozen points from one of the reserve berths and his partner Barry Burchatt getting a paid nine.
Daniel King returned a full house from four rides for the Fen Tigers - riding at Somerset tonight in the same tournament - and it could prove yet another thriller, just as the Isle of Wight turned out to be.
The return with Mildenhall is at West Row on April 8 - switched from next Tuesday, the original date.
Newport's new signing, West Midlands-based Tim Webster expects to be fit for the Mavericks first meeting - at home to Rye House a week on Sunday.
Webster, from Tipton, broke a bone in a second-half fall in Newport's opening, and so far only, home meeting against the Isle of Wight on March 19.
Peter Towersey, Mavericks team boss, said: "It is not a major break and he is confident that he will be up and running for the first meeting. He broke a small bone in an ankle and he has had treatment at Brian Simpson's clinic in Ipswich."
Karlis Ezergailis has arrived back from his native Australia - although he was held up at immigration. Towersey added: "There was a five-hour delay while they sorted out all his papers, making sure they were all in order.
But at least he wasn't turned around and sent home, as happened to some riders. He will be having second-half rides on Sunday."
And Nicky Glanz is getting ready for the first meeting - but he's getting his machines ready in Denmark and will be having practice time on home tracks before coming to Britain to ride against Rye House.
Newport's Jamie Westacott, who remains a Reading asset, is part of the Mavericks squad, this summer, Conference teams allowed to take their pick from up to 14 riders.
Towersey added: "I think it all adds up to making our first meeting quite interesting."
l Newport's Billy Legg and Karl Mason ride in the Buxton qualifying round of the World Under-21 championships on Sunday - the first event on the road which leads to the final in Terenzano, Italy, in September.
Joel Parsons and Sam Hurst ride in the qualifying meeting at Stoke on Wednesday night and the third British qualifying meeting is at Scunthorpe a week on Sunday.
It will be Legg's first meeting since crashing at Somerset in the opening meeting of the season.
