A CWMBRAN-born guardsman who gave his life in the First World War was finally honoured with a service and parade yesterday.
For years, the final resting place of Private Penry Morgan in a Llantarnam churchyard was overlooked on Remembrance Sunday, lost amid overgrown brambles.
But on the 91st anniversary of the Grenadier Guardsman's death, family and ex-servicemen gathered around the little-known grave to pay their respects.
The day was particularly poignant for Pte Morgan's 91-year-old daughter Doreen Meredith, who was just six months old when her father was fatally wounded by a shell in the battle of Neuve Chapelle in France on March 12, 1915.
A short visit to a hospital in London, where he had been transported for treatment, provided Mrs Meredith with her one fleeting glimpse of her father.
Penry's great-nephew Shaun McGuire discovered the grave five years ago while piecing together his family history.
Around 30 family and community members gathered in the churchyard of St Michael and All Angels in Llantarnam for a grave-side service led by Reverend Gareth Evans.
Wreaths were laid at the headstone.
