THERE were real chariots of fire at a display of equestrian skills in Monmouthshire.

Carriage drivers showed off their talents at a one-night Sports Driving Roadshow at the David Broome Event Centre in Crick on Monday.

It got off to a flying start with an against-the-clock competition with some local drivers, including Barry Capstick taking his four-in-hand team at great speed around tight obstacles.

A version of gymkhana games was then held which climaxed in a contest with the Chariots of Fire team who then concluded the spectacle with a breathtaking display only usually seen at the largest county shows.

Led by Amanda Saville, the team's arena display is described as "unmatched and exhilarating" and features extraordinary stunts. It was first performed in 1995 and has continued to grow in popularity. Scotland-based Chariots of Fire is dedicated to bringing the elite sport and pastime to mainstream audiences.

The David Broome Event Centre is world-renowned and is run by the Broome family.

It was established at the family home of the 1960 Rome Olympics medal-winning showjumper.
