Luckless Billy Legg is hoping to make it third time lucky when he returns to the number seven berth for the Newport Everest Group Wasps Premier Trophy meeting with Somerset at the Oak Tree Arena tomorrow night (tapes-up 7.30pm).
Legg, promoted along with Sam Hurst to share the reserve spot, suffered a first lap fall on the opening day of the season in the challenge meeting at Somerset.
And when he made his return at Mildenhall there was no better luck for Legg, again suffering a first lap fall. It can only get better for him.
He has withdrawn from the rescheduled round of the World Under-21 qualifying meeting at Rye House tonight, the original meeting at Buxton postponed because of rain.
However, Karl Mason will be representing the Mavericks, hoping to join Joel Parsons in the British final at King's Lynn on Wednesday.
The return Premier Trophy meeting with Somerset is on Sunday (tapes-up 2.30pm) and will be followed by the return leg between the Mavericks and Somerset Junior Rebels, the teams level at 12-12, the the meeting reduced to four heats from the scheduled six because of a curfew, the meeting running late when Legg was injured.
Mavericks: Karl Mason, Sam Hurst, Karlis Ezergailis, Billy Legg. Somerset Junior Rebels: Jordan Frampton, Lee Smart, Ben Barker, Matt Bates.
* Cwmbran-based Tom Brown continues on his travels, riding for newcomers Plymouth Devils this summer.
And it means a return to the West country for Brown whose previous clubs included the now defunct Trelawny and Weymouth. The 21-year-old Brown, a former Newport asset and rider, was at Stoke last season, becoming their asset in a swap deal for Tony Atkin.
Mike Bowden, the former St. Austell rider, is behind the new venture at Plymouth and they have landed experienced Cornish-based Seemond Stephens who will be one of the top riders in the Conference.
Bowden said: "I have known Tom since he started riding. He is a very under-rated rider who is a spectacular performer."
Newcomers Plymouth, who hold their Press and practice day tomorrow, bridge a 36-year gap when they entertain the American Dream Team on April 21.
Seven days later they stage an individual meeting and their first home Conference League clash is against Buxton on May 5 while the Conference opener is at Scunthorpe on May 1. Newport Mavericks are the visitors on May 12.
