CHURCH members took to the streets to bring home the real meaning of Good Friday to Gwent shoppers.

More than 100 people watched as scenes of Christ's last hours were played out in Abergavenny town centre.

Organised by the town's Council of Churches, the annual Passion Play was performed in various locations.

It began with the last supper at the war memorial before moving to the Garden of Gethsemane in Baker Street. The day's dramatic events climaxed as the Town Hall clock struck 11 with the re-enactment of the crucifixion in High Cross.

Jesus was played by Stuart Wheatman, who invited spectators to a service at Abergavenny Methodist Church.

Robert Ferris, 59, from Bassaleg, Newport saw the play for the first time.

He said: "It was most impressive and very moving. I will certainly make it a part of my Good Friday tradition from now on."

Similar scenes could be seen in Newport where the King's Church held their Easter procession through the city centre watched by hundreds of onlookers. Jesus was played by Michael Faulds and the event culminated with an open air service in John Frost Square.
