Newport students are setting up a unique project that will challenge film-makers worldwide to follow football fans to the World Cup in order to make a 90-minute documentary that should prove to be an international success - and help businesses in South Wales get their names known throughout the world.

The producer of the film, Nina Gertenberger, a second year student at the International Film School Wales, said: "We're hoping local companies will sponsor the film, called Our World Is Round, which will be as much a knock-out competition as the World Cup itself. "We're recruiting film-makers from each of the 32 countries competing in the finals in Germany to follow one fan who will be supporting their team - either by travelling to see the matches live or watching them at home. "As each team is knocked out of the competition so we lose that fan - until we're left with one fan who's supporting the winning team. "The result will be a film that is not just for fanatical footy fans but for everybody who likes human interest stories. "It will focus on the fans' personal stories, individual lives and unique characters and show how football can unite a divided world and bring diverse individuals together from every walk of life."

Nina, 24, and her fellow student film-makers - Nathan Mackintosh, Kurt Williams and Iain Paterson - hope to distribute the film internationally and make it commercially available on DVD as well as entering it in all major film festivals. "We're now looking for companies to sponsor the making of the film," said Nathan. "In addition to a film credit, any business that backs the film will have their logo shown on t-shirts and our website so they will gain exposure all over the world."
