MORE than 60 young litter-pickers helped clean up housing estates in Newport.
The two-day clear-up in Broadmead Park and Moorland Park saw ten lorry loads of rubbish removed.
Sian Evans, 31, a community support worker who organised the event, said she was pleased with the response from local youngsters, who were rewarded with a free lunch and certificates.
"We do have quite a big problem on the estate with rubbish," she said.
"We have been putting everything in bin bags and the council has been picking it up. The children have really enjoyed it and hopefully it will make them think twice before dropping litter."
Mrs Evans said some people had abused the event by fly-tipping tables and chairs on the pile of rubbish they had cleared.
"People have taken advantage but on the whole it has been very successful," she said.
