A NEWPORT man was yesterday jailed for harassing a neighbour - just two days after being given an ASBO.

Roy Webb, of Hillview, Gaer Road, was given the ASBO and evicted from his council flat on Tuesday.

But on Wednesday he verbally abused resident Adrian Davies, meaning he breached an anti-social behaviour injunction taken out by Newport city council against him in January.

And yesterday Webb, 46, was sentenced at Newport county court to 28 days prison.

The injunction told him not to harass anyone in the Hillview flats. But the court heard on Wednesday afternoon Webb passed Mr Davies and said: "Do you fancy a pint down the pub? I'll buy you a pint of arsenic." It was said Mr Davies felt intimidated.

Webb told the court he had been talking to himself. He said: "I was very depressed and had contemplated suicide. "As I walked past I said to myself, 'For two pints I would end it all, I would drink a pint of arsenic'."

District Judge Alfred Weaver said: "In light of the very clear warning, Mr Davies and the other residents were entitled to expect protection from any form of nuisance.

"This is the second time an injunction has been breached, and in such a short period of time after eviction proceedings."

Webb's first breach was in January, when he abused Mr Davies and was jailed for 14 days.

The injunction was renewed on February 7 pending the hearing this month.

Under the ASBO terms, Webb is not allowed to enter the flats, approach residents, use foul language in public, cause nuisance, alarm, distress or harassment to others, be threatening or abusive, or damage property. The court heard most of his anti-social behaviour occurred while he was drunk, and under the ASBO he also cannot drink alcohol in public or be drunk and disorderly.
