NEWPORT'S twinned warship could be awarded freedom of the city. HMS Severn, a Royal Navy warship, was linked with Newport in 2003.
Newport was Britain's newest city and HMS Severn was the navy's newest ship when they became affiliated.
Both sides hoped the official tie would ensure a long friendship. Now it is being proposed to honour that friendship by awarding the ship freedom of the city. City councillors will vote on the proposal at the next meeting of the full council next Tuesday.
Councillor Bob Bright, leader of the council, suggested the award. He said: "Newport is proud to be affiliated with HMS Severn. The proposal to offer the ship freedom of the city is a fitting tribute to the vital work carried out by the vessel."
HMS Severn is the second of three River Class Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) that guard the seas around the UK. She is 1,677 tonnes and measures 79.5 metres.
In her primary role, she operates on behalf of the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) ensuring fishing vessels comply with EU regulations. Since HMS Severn was affiliated with Newport, the ship and crew have built up a strong relationship with the city's people and organisations, including the local Sea Cadets Corps, schools and a nursery.
She has also docked in the city several times, often welcoming locals on board to experience a taste of life at sea.
