A SPONSOR-A-SLATE scheme is to be launched to help repair the roof of Newport's cathedral.

The roof of St Woolos Cathedral, Stow Hill, needs to be replaced because the current tiles are badly damaged through years of wear and tear.

To help fund the work, which is part of the building's £3 million restoration, people will be able to sponsor one of the new tiles for £1.

Father Mark Soady, a member of the rescue appeal committee set up to raise money for the restoration, said: "We thought it would be a way of involving Argus readers.

"It's a way ordinary people can make small contributions."

Other work needed to the Grade I listed building includes repairing the rotting oak beams in the roof and the outer stone walls, which are flaking away.

The rescue appeal committee needs to raise around £1.5 million and can then apply for match funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Cadw.

Dean Richard Fenwick, rescue appeal group leader, said the new roof needs tens of thousands of new tiles. People will be able to buy as many as they like.

Father Mark, a canon at the cathedral, said: "There will be a time capsule in the ceiling with the names of all those who contributed."

The restoration work is being carried out in phases. Work to the roof is part of phase two, the most expensive section costing around £1 million. This also includes repairs to the wooden roof beams. Phase two is scheduled to begin in 18 months.

The rescue appeal committee will launch officially on July 7, when a website will be set up with details of how to sponsor a slate.

A DVD is also going to be produced outlining the necessary repairs.
